What’s your position in NSSLHA?

I am the president of NSSLHA for the 2011-2012 school year.

What would you like to let other students know about NSSLHA who are not part of the club?

For anyone who hasn’t had a chance to get involved in NSSLHA yet, I highly recommend it! Our club is very laid back and open to a lot of new ideas – we want to hear the voice of EVERY CSD undergraduate at NYU.

What’s your favorite class this semester?

I feel very blessed that I am truly enjoying all of my classes this semester. I would like to highlight a new CSD elective being offered this semester called Voices and Listeners, taught by Dr. Sidtis. It is a wonderful opportunity to get an introduction to voice topics at the undergraduate level, and has been extremely interesting so far!

What’s a good lesson you’ve learned lately that you wouldn’t mind sharing?

Something new I have been trying out this semester is to plan out each week on my white board on Sunday night, including time to go to the gym, cook, do homework, and RELAX! Developing a rough sketch of how the week is going to pan out prevents a lot of stress for me later on.

What population are you most drawn to working with in the future?

At the current time, I am feeling very torn on this topic haha. I have really enjoyed the volunteering and work that I have done to get exposure to both adult and pediatric populations. My biggest areas of interest right now are Adult Neurogenic Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Do you have a job or an internship? If not, would you like one? what type?

I do not have a job or internship right now, but I am hoping that when I have a less busy schedule in the fall, I will be able to work as a paid Research Assistant.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love my dog (Oliver – Chihuahua), photography and anything having to do with art, going to the movies, spending time with my boyfriend/friends/family, gardening, and cooking!

What clubs are you in?

Just NSSLHA!

Do you have any contacts or are involved in any research related to the field that you would like to share?

I recently began working with Dr. Grigos as part of her research team, and I would say if you want to get involved with research, get in contact with professors in the department whose areas of interest match yours – it’s never too early!

Don’t know too much about NYU’s chapter of NSSLHA and want to know more? That’s great! We will be starting our Faces of NSSLHA portion of this blog so you get to know who’s who and how to get involved!

Student Profiles

As you may have noticed, there hasn’t been any new student profiles posted. We’re taking a little break from student profiles during this time as all of us are probably up to our knees in studying for finals and writing papers.

Posting will resume next semester with our largest one yet, “Faces of NYU NSSLHA” This will include a series of small interviews with our current NSSLHA board members. Find out who they are and who you can ask about getting more involved 🙂

Study hard, but don’t forget to take some relaxation time too! Good luck, and see you after the break!

What’s your favorite class this semester?

Theater as an Art Form, with Professor Joe Salvatore. I’ve been involved with theater since the sixth grade and have been in love with it ever since. It’s great to be in a classroom full of like-minded thespians!

What’s a good lesson you’ve learned lately that you wouldn’t mind sharing?

Check your email every morning. Professors will email you and cancel classes occasionally – it isn’t fun waking up to make your 9:30am class, only to find that you didn’t have to.

What are you interested in learning more about during your studies in the department?

I love working with kids, so I’d like to learn more about language impairments in children.

Do you have a job or an internship?  If not, would you like one? what type?

I’m a tutor with America Reads, which is a fantastic program if you’re interested in working with kids. I’m currently assigned at The Neighborhood School, and I help out in a first/second grade classroom.

What do you like to do for fun?

Dance and theater are my two passion. I love seeing Broadway shows, and I’ve even taken a few dance classes here in the city.

What clubs are you in?

Right now I’m only in NSSHLA. I’m in the process of joining AATA (Asian American Theater Alliance), but I haven’t been able to make any of the meetings yet.

Do you have any contacts or are involved in any research related to the field that you would like to share?

I recently signed onto Dr. Maria Grigo’s research lab, where we study the motor speech of children with apraxia versus the motor speech of other speech-impaired children.

What’s your favorite word?

I love the word “delightful”. It’s an underused word and it makes me smile!

What’s your least favorite word?

I hate the word “moist”. It just has an unpleasant sound to it.

What sound do you hate?

I hate the sound of my alarm, because it signals that I actually have to get out of my cozy bed.

What sound do you love?

I love the sound of a perfectly-tuned piano, played by a skilled pianist.

Leah Lavi ~Sophomore

What’s your favorite class this semester?

My favorite class this semester is Survey of Developmental Psychology with Dr. Melzi.

What’s a good lesson you’ve learned lately that you wouldn’t mind sharing?

Do what you can, with what you have, where ever you are.

What are you interested in learning more about during your studies in the department?

I’m interested in learning how language disorders develop in children unexpectedly (for example, during childhood or adolescence). More specifically, how young children develop lisps; why their tongues are placed where they are without them being able to control it.

Do you have a job or an internship?  If not, would you like one? what type?

I have a job as a salesperson in a clothing boutique. I’d really like to shadow a SLP in a daycare or grade school.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to put on my nikes, grab some jasmine green tea, and walk around the city, usually SoHo. Walk in and out of stores. It’s the best way to see real people. I become more alert to how people speak to each other, how they communicate via tongue and body language. It’s so interesting to me. I quickly pick up on who has a speech disability and who doesn’t.

What clubs are you in?

I’m the secretary of IJC (Iranian Jewish Club) and I’d love to become more active in NSSHLA.

What’s your favorite word?

Hippopotamus

What’s your least favorite word?

Fork

What sound do you hate?

I hate the sound of a fork hitting a plate. It makes me uneasy.

What sound do you love?

Honestly, I LOVE the sound of silence. I love the sound of calm. It’s serene and relaxing.

Thanks Leah! If anyone would like to know more about Leah, feel free to comment and ask questions 🙂

(Leah is not yet in the department but hopes to apply soon! Say hi if you see her around and offer encouragement!)

Larissa Lee Lum ~Freshman

What’s your favorite class this semester?

I think ASL I is my absolute favorite class…I’m always exhausted by the end of the day, but that class always wakes me up and makes me laugh!

What’s a good lesson that you’ve learned lately that you wouldn’t mind sharing?

Leave for class 15 minutes before it starts so you can take the elevator! Otherwise you have to take the stairs…and walking into class out of breath is kind of embarrassing haha

What are you interested in learning more about during your studies in the major?

I really like little kids, so I’m interested in learning more about language disorders in children

Do you have a job or an internship? If not, would you like one? what type?

I don’t have a job or internship, but when I get older I want to work on research in the department…I think it’d be really good exposure to the field!

What do you like to do for fun?

I’ve been playing tennis since I was 5, so I always played tennis in my free time at home…I haven’t played since I got to the city, though =/ I’m considering trying out for the team next year!

What clubs are you in?

I’m a part of the Asian Cultural Union (ACU) and Rotaract club

Do you have any contacts or are involved in any research related to the field that you would like to share?

Not yet, but hopefully I will in the future : )

What’s your favorite word?

I love the word Serendipity! It’s also the name of a really cute movie…if you like chick flicks you should watch it!

What’s your least favorite word?

I have no idea why, but I hate the word ‘funky’ …Even typing the word made me cringe haha

What sound do you hate?

I hate the sirens and loud trucks that wake me up when I’m sleeping/napping.

What sound do you love?

I love waking up to the man playing sax outside Washington Square Park in the morning : ) I can hear him from my room, and it’s the best way to start the day!

Thanks for sharing Larissa!
